Every month Council publishes a newsletter designed for people 55 years and over called 'The Lane Cove Connection'. The newsletter contains information about activities, events and services available to people over 55 in Lane Cove and surrounding areas.

The Lane Cove Connection is distributed by email and hard copy to over 1000 local Lane Cove seniors every month. If you would like your event or information included in the next edition, please complete the application form by the 14th of each month.

Living at Home and Staying Connected - A Guide for Older Seniors Living in the Lane Cove Area

Help with waste collection and verge mowing - Nature strip mowing service

Lane Cove Council relies on residents and businesses to maintain the grassed nature strips adjoining their property. Council provides a Nature Strip Mowing Service for those residents who are unable to maintain the nature strip and meet eligibility requirements.

You will initially need to complete the Nature Strip Mowing Service application form to enable Council to determine your eligibility for placement on the Nature Strip Mowing List.

Waste Collection support service

Some older residents may be physically unable to take their garbage bin to the kerbside and do not have neighbours or family willing to assist. Council currently provides additional assistance to members of the community who require help in wheeling their waste bins out for collection. Eligibility for this service however is assessed on a case-by-case basis, subject to certain criteria and a risk assessment. Help with other services - Sydney Community Services

Sydney Community Services work in partnership with Lane Cove Council and are funded to provide services such as: 

  • Home Maintenance and Modifications 
  • Domestic Assistance - Cleaning/Laundry
  • Gardening
  • Meal Deliveries
  • Shopping Services

Located on the ground floor of 1 Pottery Lane, Lane Cove, they also offer in-house activities such as board games (Scrabble, Social Bridge, Solo and Rummikub), seniors computer club, walking and other wellness activities.  To find out more about their services you can call them on 02 9427 6425 or visit the Sydney Community Services website.

Next of Kin Register

The Next of Kin Register is free and enables persons living alone to record their details at the local police station. The register holds information of your nominated Next of Kin, doctors and dentist details and any medical alerts.

This information may assist the ambulance and police in an emergency situation, to contact a relative or other nominated person to inform of your situation.

You will be provided with a key ring and a sticker that is to be placed on your home phone to alert emergency services that you are registered with the Next of Kin Program.

How do I register?

Attend your local Police Station and ask to speak with the Crime Prevention Officer about the Next of Kin Program.

Housing Information for Seniors

During the Strategy for an Age-Friendly Lane Cove consultations Council was asked to provide information about granny flats/dual occupancies.

A Granny flat is a secondary dwelling which is a self-contained dwelling, is established in conjunction with another dwelling (the principal dwelling), is on the same lot of land (not being an individual lot in a strata plan or community title scheme) as the principal dwelling, and is located within, or is attached to, or is separate from, the principal dwelling.

A Council or an accredited Private Certifier can approve granny flats as a Complying Development (CDC) without the need for a Development Application, provided it meets the specific development standards.
