Tree vandalism in Stringybark Reserve
Published on 01 April 2025
Council has become aware of an act of tree vandalism in Stringybark Reserve. A hybrid blue gum, which is more than 60 years old, appears to have been deliberately damaged.
Unfortunately, due to the extent of damage the tree now poses an increased risk to park users and neighbouring properties. To make the area safe, Council will be removing the tree’s crown and the trunk will be retained as habitat and monitored.
These works will need to take place as soon as possible and as a result you may notice workers on-site undertaking these tree works in the coming days. Neighbouring residents have been notified and modified access to the reserve will be in place while the works are being undertaken.
Help stop tree vandalism
A Tree Preservation Order applies in the Lane Cove Local Government Area. This Order prohibits the willful destruction, cutting, removal or pruning of any tree unless the consent of Council has been obtained. Contravention of this Order is a breach of the Environmental Planning & Assessment Act 1979 and can incur fines up to $1,100,000.00. Council’s Rangers will be monitoring this area for future attacks on any native vegetation.
Native trees are a key component of the ecological value of our native bushland. They improve air quality, help counter extremes of temperature, protect soil and water supplies, and provide habitat for wildlife.
Council is seeking information from anybody who can help identify those responsible for this act of vandalism at Stringybark Reserve.
All sources of information will be kept confidential.
To report vandalism to this hybrid blue gum or learn more about the value of trees, phone Council on 9911 3555 or visit www.lanecove.nsw.gov.au/treevandalism.
